How do I pay for the bus in Montevideo?
With the STM card, tapping it on the machine, or in cash when you board. The one-hour and two-hour tickets cost more if you pay in cash.
In Montevideo, the STM bus is paid with the STM card or in cash. The card is the easiest: you don't have to look for coins or change.
- Tap the STM card on the machine when you board.
- The machine takes the fare from the card balance.
- If you don't have a card, you can pay in cash when you board, but the one-hour and two-hour tickets cost more that way.
There is also payment by debit from a BROU account or with some credit cards, in the postpaid option of the STM card. The details are on the STM page.
Fares and conditions are set by the Montevideo city government and can change. For today's prices, see the STM fares page (montevideo.gub.uy).
