About Garita
What you should know before trusting an app to tell you when your bus is coming.
What is Garita?
Garita shows the buses of all of Uruguay on a map, and works out how long until they reach your stop. It’s free, has no ads and you don’t need to create an account.
Who makes it?
It’s made by nosto.studio, a studio in Maldonado. It’s independent of all the companies and all the local governments.
Where does it work?
All over Uruguay. In Maldonado, the four companies (CODESA, Maldonado Turismo, Micro LTDA and Guscapar): the stops on record reach Punta del Este, San Carlos, Piriápolis, Pan de Azúcar and Aiguá, and the beach towns on the coast: Punta Ballena, La Capuera, Solanas, Portezuelo, Ocean Park, La Barra, Manantiales and José Ignacio. In Montevideo, the STM (CUTCSA, COETC, COME and UCOT). In Canelones and San José, the metropolitan lines. In Rivera, Micro LTDA. In Colonia, Sol Antigua. In Rocha, the Intendencia de Rocha. And the buses between departments that leave from Tres Cruces.
Where does the data come from?
From what companies and institutions publish about their buses and routes, and from the official timetables between departments. Garita puts it together and shows it with each one’s name. The map is from OpenStreetMap and CARTO.
Are the minutes exact?
No: they’re approximate and can be wrong. We don’t guarantee they’re exact and we’re not responsible if you miss your bus.
What about my location?
It’s used on your phone to center the map and suggest the closest bus stop, and it isn’t sent to any server. No account, no ads. We do look at how the app is used, to fix what isn’t clear, and we ask before using anything that needs cookies. It’s all in privacy.
Can I use the data in my app?
The data doesn’t belong to Garita: it belongs to the companies and institutions that publish it. Garita is not a public API, and the addresses it uses internally are made for this page, not for other programs to call. If you need the data for a project of your own, ask the companies and institutions that publish it: they own it and they’re the ones who can say yes.
Garita is in beta: it’s new, it can fail and the estimates are still being tuned. If something’s wrong, write to us.
